BIOGRAFIA:
Formada em Birmingham, Inglaterra, em 1968, a banda Black Sabbath foi a pioneira em lançar as fundações do heavy metal que assaltou a música popular nos anos 1970 e 1980. A maneira diferente de tocar - som cru, pesado - com letras mais fortes - abordando temas místicos tornaram-se o modelo para inúmeros grupos que se seguiram. Seu álbum homônimo de 1970 continua sendo um dos mais inovativos e influentes da história do rock.
O quarteto composto por Ozzy Osbourne (vocalista), Tony Iommi (guitarrista), Geezer Butler (baixista) e Bill Ward (baterista), inicialmente se chamou Polka Tulk e mais tarde Earth. Tomaram de assalto o circuito de pubs e clubes de sua cidade natal, com muita energia, blues e rock. Companheiros de escola e vizinhos em Birmingham, o grupo ganhou muitos seguidores na Inglaterra e em 1969 mudaram seu nome para Black Sabbath. O novo nome espelhava a imagem escura, pesada e mística da banda, seu gosto por temas sobrenaturais.
Ainda em 1969 entraram em estúdio para gravar o seu primeiro disco. O álbum Black Sabbath chegou ao Top 10 das paradas britânicas, onde permaneceu por três meses e valeu à banda um grupo de fãs fervorosos em ambos os lados do atlântico.
O grande salto para a banda ocorreu com a gravação de Paranoid, um álbum pioneiro do heavy metal. Contando com os riffs cortantes da guitarra de Iommi, o excelente vocal de Ozzy e o ritmo de Butler e Ward, o álbum alcançou o número um nas paradas inglesas e chegou ao número oito na América, onde permaneceu por mais de um ano, virando disco de platina. A faixa título, um verdadeiro mergulho na loucura, foi o maior hit, além dos clássicos War Pigs,Iron Man e Fairies Wear Boots . A banda fez sua primeira turnê estado-unidense no outono deste ano.
Master of Reality, o terceiro álbum do Black Sabbath, foi lançado em agosto de 1971. Entre as oito canções estavam algumas que se tornaram marcas registradas da banda, como "Children of the Grave" e "Sweet Leaf".
O Black Sabbath gravou o álbum chamado Vol. 4 no início de 1972 no estúdio Record Plant, em Los Angeles. Somando-se a poderosas canções como "Supernaut" e "Under The Sun", o álbum revelava um lado completamente novo para a banda, com canções melódicas, cuidadosamente escritas e tocadas, como "Cornucopia" e a instigante "Laguna Sunrise", uma composição instrumental.
Considerado um dos clássicos do hard rock, o álbum de 1973, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, ganhou aclamação da crítica. Trazia arranjos mais elaborados, em canções como "Killing Yourself to Live", "Looking For Today" e a faixa título. Produzido, escrito e gravado pela banda, o álbum é considerado por muitos o melhor dos anos com Ozzy.
Quando Sabotage, sexto disco do Black Sabbath, foi lançado em 1975, não apenas estava comprovada a competência da banda, mas também era óbvia a melhoria dos arranjos, produção e lirismo, representando a banda ainda no topo da carreira. Traz o clássico do heavy metal "Symptom of the Universe" e "The Writ", que retratava problemas gerenciais pelos quais a banda passava.
Technical Ecstasy trata-se de um dos mais inventivos e originais álbuns de estúdio do Black Sabbath. Traz canções típicas da banda como "Back Street Kids", "Gypsy", "Rock 'N' Roll Doctor" e a principal do LP, "Dirty Women".
Em 1977 Ozzy deixou o Black Sabbath por problemas pessoais. Durante esse período, de outubro de 1977 à janeiro de 1978, Dave Walker do Fleetwood Mac o substituiu. Com esta formação a banda tocou ao vivo apenas uma vez, para um programa de televisão, e gravou "Junior's Eyes" em uma versão embrionária.
Sendo o oitavo álbum de estúdio de uma carreira que se estende por mais de duas décadas, o lançamento de 1978, Never Say Die!, traz algumas das mais memoráveis letras. O álbum captura toda a força da formação original, sendo último com Ozzy à frente do Sabbath. Ozzy se recusou a gravar material originalmente escrito pela banda com Walker, daí o fato do baterista Bill Ward ter assumido os vocais na canção "Swinging the Chain". Inclui ainda "Johnny Blade", "Breakout", "Shock Wave" e a faixa título, entre outras.
Em 1979 algumas composições do próximo álbum já estavam sendo finalizadas, e seriam gravadas. Ozzy Osbourne, com problemas pessoais, deixou a banda novamente. Segundo Tony Iommi, "Ozzy apenas não estava mais afim de continuar com a banda. Não havia mais vontade nele". Logo, Ozzy foi substituído por Ronnie James Dio, um estado-unidense que havia participado do grupo Elf e sido parte da banda Rainbow de Ritchie Blackmore. Foi a primeira mudança de formação do grupo em mais de uma década. Heaven and Hell foi o primeiro álbum com o novo cantor. As músicas foram escritas pela banda com a participação de Dio, que assinava todos as letras. Para a maioria dos fãs assíduos do Black Sabbath na época, a mudança de vocal soava como uma ofensa, mas a canção "Heaven and Hell" se tornou um hino para os novos fãs de Black Sabbath, pois esta era a época do tão aclamado NWOBHM, o New Wave Of British Heavy Metal.
Lançado em 1981, segundo álbum com o vocalista Dio e o primeiro álbum com o novo baterista Vinnie Appice, Mob Rules apresenta canções como "Turn Up The Night", "Slipping Away" e "The Mob Rules".
Em 1982 o Black Sabbath lançou o álbum ao vivo Live Evil contendo todos os grandes hits de todos os álbuns lançados. Logo após a gravação Ronnie James Dio e Vinnie Appice deixaram a banda. Um boato famoso diz que o Dio tentou "sabotar" a mixagem do álbum para destacar a sua voz no som da gravação[carece de fontes].
O álbum Born Again, de 1983, trazia como vocalista Ian Gillan, originalmente membro do Deep Purple. O baterista original do Sabbath, Bill Ward, voltara à banda. Alguns dos destaques deste álbum são "Trashed", "Digital Bitch" e "Zero The Hero". Na turnê, Bev Bevan, da banda ELO, substituiu Ward. Depois da turnê Bev Bevan e Ian Gillan deixaram a banda. Bill Ward voltou e o Sabbath experimentou um novo vocalista, Dave Donato. Esta formação nunca gravou e Dave Donato foi demitido da banda após uma entrevista muito egocêntrica[carece de fontes]. Tentaram novamente manter a banda no ar com o vocalista Ron Keel. Finalmente, com a saída de Geezer Butler, o Sabbath acabou.
Três anos depois, em 1986, Tony Iommi lançou o álbum Seventh Star, anunciado como "Black Sabbath featuring Tony Iommi". Deveria tratar-se de um álbum solo de Iommi, mas a gravadora decidiu usar o nome do Black Sabbath. Glenn Hughes, do Deep Purple, foi o vocalista. Durante a turnê estado-unidense Glenn Hughes saiu, sendo substituído por Ray Gillen. Com ele, foi gravada uma demotape do que seria o próximo álbum. A gravadora exigiu que Ray Gillen fosse substituído pelo vocalista, até então desconhecido, Tony Martin.
Em 1987 o Black Sabbath lançou o seu décimo quarto álbum, The Eternal Idol, que teve grandes sucessos como "The Shining", "Hard Life to Love", "Born to Lose" e "Lost Forever". A formação da época era constituída de Tony Iommi, Tony Martin (vocais), Dave Spitz, Bob Daisley (baixo), Bev Bevan (percussão) e Eric Singer (bateria, que mais tarde iria para o KISS). Em 1989, o Black Sabbath lançou Headless Cross, com destaques como "Devil and Daughter", "When Death Calls", "Black Moon" e a faixa título. A formação consistia de Tony Iommi, Tony Martin, Cozy Powell (bateria) e Laurance Cottle (baixo). Laurance Cottle mais tarde foi substituído por Neil Murray.
Em 1990, vinte e dois anos após a formação, foi gravado TYR. Mantinha o estilo inaugurado em 1987 com "The Eternal Idol". Alguns destaques deste álbum são "Anno Mundi", "Jerusalem", "The Sabbath Stones" e a balada "Feels Good to Me". Este álbum obteve um recorde de vendas, completamente inesperado. 1992 foi o ano da reunião de Ronnie James Dio, Geezer Butler, Vinnie Appice e Tony Iommi. O álbum Dehumanizer foi aguardado e aclamado. Alguns dos hits foram "Time Machine", "TV Crimes", "Master of Insanity" e "Sins Of The Father". "Time Machine" fez parte da trilha sonora do filme Wayne's World ("Quanto Mais Idiota Melhor").
Em 1994 o Black Sabbath lançou seu décimo oitavo álbum, Cross Purposes que entre outros hits incluiu as canções "I Witness", "Cross of Thorns", "The Hand That Rocks The Cradle", "Immaculate Deception" e "Psychophobia". A formação da banda consistia de Tony Martin (vocal), Geezer Butler, Tony Iommi e Bobby Rondinelli (bateria, ex-Rainbow). Nesta época foi lançado também o álbum ao vivo "Cross Purposes Live", que era um box com o disco e o vídeo do concerto.
Em 1995 o Black Sabbath lançou Forbidden, com o destaque para as canções "The Illusion of Power", "Get a Grip", "Shaking Off The Chains" e "Sick and Tired". A formação da banda consistia de Tony Martin, Neil Murray (baixo), Tony Iommi e Cozy Powell (bateria). Cozy Powell deixou a banda no meio da turnê estado-unidense e foi substituído por Bobby Rondinelli.
No ano de 1997 foi anunciada a tão esperada volta da formação original, com Ozzy, Bill Ward, Tony Iommi e Geezer Butler, um momento histórico para o Black Sabbath. Logo após, seguiu-se o Ozzfest com várias bandas além da banda de Ozzy e, fechando a noite, o Black Sabbath original. O resultado desta turnê foi Reunion (álbum), um álbum ao vivo que traz clássicos absolutos juntamente com músicas que a muito não se escutavam num show da banda, caso de "Dirty Women" e "Sweet Leaf".
Depois de alguns boatos sobre a substituição de Ozzy por Ronnie James Dio, foi confirmado em outubro de 2006 que a formação do álbum Heaven and Hell (Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, Bill Ward e Dio) voltaria a tocar junto, sob o nome desse álbum, participando de festivais e gravando a compilação "Black Sabbath: The Dio Years". No fim de Novembro Bill Ward declarou em seu sítio[1] que não participará das gravações ou dos concertos desse projeto e será substituido por Vinnie Appice.
